For those that don’t know, Pick Me Up is an annual exhibition at Somerset House in London featuring all the best graphic and illustration artists, collectives, shops and publishers. It’s a great showcase of the contemporary design world. Themes and trends we noticed throughout the exhibition were: the alphabet, greasy food (in particular chips, burgers and pizzas) and cute foxes.

Finally, my treat to myself… the most AMAZING print by Frann Preston-Gannon. Loved this before I even went to Pick Me Up, and just couldn’t resist buying it. Love.

As the exhibition focused on traditional techniques, the main packaging was a recognisable metal pencil tin. Inside the tin is a small old-fashioned looking story book with pages detailing the exhibition, information and artwork on each artist, and some little activities to encourage the visitor to draw and doodle. There is also a set of wooden characters, one from each artist, which can be pushed out from the wooden base and put into stands, to encourage play and making up stories. A set of colouring pencils sits at the bottom of the tin, ready to be used by the visitor. The tin has a paper band wrapped around, featuring the exhibition information and some of the characters.

Everything has been designed by me, but the individual artwork and character designs belong to each artist. You can see my portfolio on Behance.

The winner and 5 runners up will be published in their summer Games edition of the magazine… fingers crossed!

To tell these stories, I took the form of a handwritten travelogue with little drawings, notes and observations about the people and what they do. To make it a bit more fun I added some nice strong splashes of colour (I love colour).
